Overall I really liked taking portfolio this first marking period. Although I didn’t really fit in with the other students artistically due to only taking one art class previously. But other than that I felt like the class really enforced creativity in which I loved. It made me realize how creative I can be when expressing ideas thorough drawing. Along with that, the class helped with just allowing me to sketch whatever I’m thinking no matter what it was through the sketch book. I have never taken a class that was so self driven and allowed for so much freedom to make different pieces of art.

To begin this project I first came up with a social commentary idea that had a strong meaning. Once decided on an idea I bagan to sketch. My plan was to make a magnifying class and have black crime statistics inside that glass. This would represent how cops and other people are all focused on black crimes and that race is the first to blame. Next I payed down the statistics inside the magnifying glass, overlapping each other. Then I put down matte medium in order to allow the statistics to stick. Once I finished that, I began to use charcoal and make a fade as I got closer to the magnifying glass. In this step of the project I thought that the shading was pretty difficult. Trying to get an even shade the whole way around was peobably the most difficult part of this process. Finally I finished the shading the whole way around the magnifying glass. Then I had a pretty difficult decision to make. I had to decide whether to make the matte black or white. Then I chose black in order to keep the pattern of fade from the putside of the project toward the magnifying glass. Overall I felt that this project made me realize what political events/ what’s going on around us.
To begin the metamorphosis project I first made a background on the bottom half of the paper. Then I began to paint a jellyfish that would be light with a dark blue background. The first jellyfish was important because I would base all the others off of the colors used in the first one. Finally I made the dark blue background begin to fade into a lighter blue as it went up the paper. For each jellyfish I used the same concept, but with different positions and shapes of the jellyfish. As I made the transition from the water to the horizon, I had some trouble with picking out a color that fit right. As soon as I finished the horizon I used water colored pencils to get the jellyfish to get a kite like look as it cane out of the water. Overall I thought that water colors were fairly difficult to use. The hardest part was he ring the correct color that I needed for specific parts of the project. Although I did like the new experience considering I’ve never really used water colors before. If I could use water colors again, I would prefer them over charcoal as I used for my last project.
Global- A global issue that continues to become increasingly worse is crime. The crime rate is estimated to be 6.2 homicides per 100,000 people. Also corruption within city’s and the police that may be corrupt adds to the rate of crime considering there isn’t much enforcement of the law in these areas. National- A national issue that is worse in some areas than in others but is seen everywhere is poverty. In 2010 about 46 million Americans were officially in poverty. This was an increase by 12.5 percent since 2007. Poverty , being a large issue also leads to an increase in crime. State- education funding: Pennsylvania school districts continue to depend on the coach communities wealth to support the students. On average other states contribute 45 percent of total education funding, as Pennsylvania only contributes 36 percent. Therefore Pennsylvania school districts must pay 54 percent of education costs.
This example of metamorphosis appeals to me a cause I am leaning towards do an animal metamorphosis too. I like how there is a simple object used being the light bulb and this person turned it into a more complex drawing being a dragonfly. Also the shading that was applied makes the drawing seem more detailed. This image takes a simplistic idea of a pencil cup and turns it into an octopus. The shading applied to the octopus makes it seem more detailed and realistic. I like how an object is being turned into a more advanced sketch by adding lines and different shading.
To begin my process I started out by making myself a little more comfortable with drawing skulls split in half. Then I had to take a picture of myself and scale it down so I could use it for the projection I needed to split the face in half. The picture I chose wasn’t the best though and it made it a bit harder to see where the shadows existed. After I finished sketching the projection of my face in pencil I took the projection of a skull and did the same process on the opposing side of the face. When the projection was over I needed to transfer everything into charcoal. So I began darkening the lines with charcoal. At first my thought was to keep the face side in pencil and the skull in charcoal but I eventually changed that idea and made everything into charcoal. Next I made the skull side of the face have a darker charcoal background and the face part just lightly shaded. Throughout this project the main struggle I faced was that I don’t really have experience in drawing with charcoal or even drawing faces.
